At WhiteWater Consulting, we’ve had the pleasure of working with businesses of all shapes and sizes. And though we delight in each of these working relationships, we take a particular pleasure in getting to know the folks behind close-knit family businesses. Helping family-owned companies achieve longevity, harmony, and success is one of the most rewarding things we get to do.
It’s this experience working with family businesses that prompted our latest book. We are happy to announce the upcoming publication of The Family Business Blueprint: Creating Your Succession Roadmap, written by our own Chuck Cooper and available for purchase later in July.
About the Book
In The Family Business Blueprint, we seek to address some of the central tensions that family businesses face. After all, when Mom and Dad devote their blood, sweat, and tears to creating their own successful enterprise, it naturally becomes a big part of their legacy… a true labor of love. But even the most energetic and industrious entrepreneurs know they can’t keep running the show forever.
Passing business ownership to the next generation can be fraught with challenges. There may be different expectations about what the business should be, or how it should be run. There may be conflicting opinions about how best to communicate or to strategize for ongoing success. The founding generation may have a hard time surrendering control of their business baby, especially if they feel like their values are not shared by the generation to come. Meanwhile, the second or third generation may not have interest in running the company as their parents did, if they are even interested in running it at all.
Open, honest, intergenerational succession planning is the best way to ensure everyone is on the same page, and that the business is well-positioned for a frictionless transition and for long-term success. In The Family Business Blueprint, we’ll provide some unique insight into how those conversations should unfold, based on our own experience mediating countless family business succession planning sessions.
Readers of The Family Business Blueprint will gain a better understanding of what succession planning is, and what it is meant to achieve; some of the most common obstacles, and how to avoid them; and some best-practices for having healthy conversations about the future of the business, and the future of the family.
